Back Pain

Back Pain

Back pain is something that has been shown to be fairly ubiquitous, affecting about 80% of the adult population at some time in their life. However, there are several preventative measures that will tackle back pain as well as prosaic means for dealing with back pain as it occurs (for example: using cushions to provide lumbar support).

Support your back

There are several varieties of support available to back pain sufferers. There is furniture made specially to accommodate back pain as well as additive cushions to modify existing furniture, cushions for neck pain. Good posture is tantamount to good back pain treatment, so if for example you are unable to obtain a special ergonomic chair, once you pin point the source of your back pain (whether it be lower or upper back pain) inserts can compensate for regular office chairs deficiency.

Staying Fit

Daily low impact cardio exercise such as swimming and stationary bike work will help get the muscles in the back moving; stretching and oxygenating them, thus making them healthier and less prone to strain and injury. Equally, walking at a pace somewhat faster than normal will help achieve this as well.

Keeping Hydrated

Proper hydration is important for muscles to maintain mobility and flexibility while being used during exercise. When well hydrated, muscles are much less likely to be injured or go into spasm, which would otherwise limit your workout capabilities and restrict the therapeutic effects of the exercise.

Distributing Your Weight Evenly

When weight is distributed evenly and naturally throughout the body there is less likely to be undue strain on a particular muscle or a particular group of muscles. Practicing good posture keeping your back straight, shoulders back with both feet planted evenly on the ground can do a lot to help prevent back pain from forming in the first place.

Relaxation

Muscles tense as part of a normal reaction to stress, but undue stress over a long period can contribute to a myriad of health issue not the least of which is back pain. Learning to relax with deep breathing and activities that incorporate controlled breathing exercises such as yoga can help lower stress—helping to unlock the tensed muscles in the back. Equally, yoga is a great way to stretch muscles around the body furthering the relief from persistent back pain.

However, it is important to note that back pain can have other causes besides skeletomuscular issues (for example, in some cases colorectal cancer can cause pain to be referred to the back). It is therefore very important that you consult your doctor about chronic back pain—though in the vast majority of cases, the above suggestions can be tried safely and with little cost.
