What to Expect in Youth Care Work Jobs
Working with youth offenders requires social workers to operate in multi-disciplinary teams. The workers are also expected to have special skills and advanced knowledge of criminal case law and children’s rights. Those are primarily needed as in many occasions the youth offenders have been in trouble with the law. Social workers in this field are also addressed as youth workers and are often employed by an NHS trust organization, within the community, and law enforcement agencies.
The main objective in this type of care work jobs is guiding young people to learn, grow and develop while playing a positive role in the community. In the attempts to achieve the goal, youth workers generally spend 35 to 37 hours per week working in teams aiming at young people aged between 13 and 19 years.
Their project includes several tasks that often include organizing fun yet constructive activities such as sports, art performance, outward bound activities, etc. By doing those kinds of activities, it is hoped that young people will be able to develop ideas, learning skills, and awareness about issues such as health and politics, and make changes in their lives.
Someone who wants to be a youth and community worker should meet the qualifications. Some of those are the ability to develop and lead programs of informal learning, flexibility to relate to young people from different backgrounds, excellent communication and listening skills, and of course sincere interest in working with young people. Recently, youth care work skills are highly in demand, which means that opportunities are increasing.
